Chess is a very popular board game, it is necessary to know the rules before you start playing it!

The First thing that comes up is, how to arrange the chess pieces? Before we get into the arrangement of the chess pieces. Here’s an important instruction.

Light colour square should be placed toward the right hand corner of the board.

Once the board is placed in correct orientation, let’s get to the pieces!

In olden days elephants were used as barriers as they were huge in size and could crush any enemy who would try to attack the army from the corners. Hence we place the elephants/Rooks at the corners of the board.

Next we have the piece which can jump and kill the invaders next to the rook as the second warrior from the corner.

Bishops are placed next, they are placed close to the king and queen as they belong to the noble community.

Now comes the confusion part. You would have always got confused with the placement of a king and Queen right? Here is a trick to remember it!

Queen sits on the square of the same colour as its complexion (i.e, White queen on white colour square, Black Queen on black colour square)

The square remaining on the row is where the king is placed (Another way to remember: Kings sits on opposite colour square to its complexion)

Once the bigger pieces are placed on the board, protect them by placing the soldiers / Pawn in front of all the big warriors.
