Make a beach in a jar!
Making a beach in a jar keepsake is probably the best way to store your perfect beach day away in a tiny jar that you can keep revisiting in the future.
You can also use these beach jars to spark relevant and educational discussions with your kids about the different sands and shells that you collect from various beaches that you visit as a family!
Without any further ado, grab your kids and your supplies and let’s get right into this fun little activity!
What materials will you require to make a beach in a jar?
You will require these materials to make a beach in a jar with your kids
- A glass jar with a tight-fitting lid (mason jars work super well for this)
- Paper tags (these are super easy to make by hand!)
- Pens (Sharpies, colored pens, or even color pencils)
- String/Ribbon/Yarn
- Shells and Sand that you collected from your visit to the beach
- Beach stickers and/or stamps and other decorative items (this is optional; you could draw your own beach doodles if you like)
Now that you have your materials ready, let’s make a beach in a jar!
How to make a beach in a jar?
Follow these steps to make your very own personalized beach in a jar
Step 1: Wash your glass jar and the lid and dry it off completely.
Step 2: Now add sand to the bottom of your jar. Arrange your pretty shells on top of the sand. Place and tightly secure the lid on your jar.
Step 3: Now get to decorating your paper tag. You can include the date of when you visited a particular beach and its location too! Use stamps, stickers, colors/colored pencils to make your paper tag look really pretty.
Step 4: You can attach your paper tag to the jar with any piece of string, ribbon or yarn that is available to you.
Bonus: You could also write out and attach a particular memory from that beach visit – something funny, weird or heartwarming!
And there you have it! Your Beach in a Jar is ready!
Be careful not to shake your jar too much because it may cause the shells to get buried under the sand.
Now when you and your kids are back home, use this jar to remind you of your fun-filled times and adventures at the beach. This is a great way to remember something special.
And it doesn’t have to stop at one jar!
Encourage your kids to make different jars for every family beach visit and you could then compare your jars and learn something interesting about the contents of your different beach jars! You can compare the colors and consistencies of the sand and the uniqueness of the shells that you have collected.
