How to Draw a Sunflower?3 min read

Is your kid a total nature nerd? Does she love admiring cute birds that visit your garden or adoring every little flower that blooms? Then why don’t you sit with your child and do some nature drawing! Your child will have fun drawing and painting a little piece of nature on paper and you will be able to spend some quality time together too.

This time we have a really special topic for you – a sunflower! Did you know that the incredibly famous French painter Van Gogh painted a whole series dedicated to sunflowers? But he wasn’t the only painter to do so. Various other painters have made beautiful paintings on these flowers too. And why wouldn’t they; sunflowers are some of the prettiest flowers on the earth!

Unlike what most people think, sunflowers are not just yellow! Sunflowers can also be red and purple. Another fun sunflower fact is that young sunflowers follow the sun every day from sunrise to sunset until they reach maturity.

This art project that we have for you and your child will just take a very simple and pretty straightforward look at a yellow sunflower. Encourage your kid to grab some crayons, color pencils and/or paints – whatever she wants in order to color and bring life to her sunflower after drawing it.

Now let’s get into it!

What materials are needed to draw a sunflower?

The materials that you will require to draw your sunflower include the following:

  •   Pencil
  •   Eraser
  •   Sheet of (drawing or watercolor) paper
  •   Black marker/sketch pen
  •   Crayons/color pencils/paints

How long will it take to draw a sunflower?

You might take around 45 minutes to draw and color/paint your sunflower. So, make sure you have set aside some time to truly enjoy this activity with your child.

How to draw a sunflower?

Before you begin, we would suggest that you divide your paper into four parts either by making lightly dotted lines or by folding your paper to create creases. Whatever you choose to do, make sure to divide your paper horizontally and vertically in half. This will help to provide you with a reference grid that will help you to draw with greater ease.

Here is our super easy step-by-step tutorial of how to draw a sunflower:

Step 1: First, draw a small circle.

Step 2: Now, draw a slightly bigger circle around the previous circle.

Step 3: Around your outer circle, draw your sunflower petals.

Step 4: Fill it by drawing more petals in between the previously drawn petals.

Step 5: Now move on to the bottom of your sunflower. Draw the stem and leaves.

Step 6: Next add the necessary details in your leaves and flower.

Step 7: Trace your flower with a black marker or yellow, brown and black crayons.

Step 8: Now color or paint your little sunflower in yellow, brown and green.

Step 9: Don’t leave your background empty! Color or paint it with a contrasting color to that of your sunflower.

Yay! You’ve just drawn and painted a perfectly bright and graceful sunflower!

We’ve given you the steps for one sunflower, but you can add as many sunflowers as you wish if you’re feeling adventurous.

We hope this was a fun little project for you and your child to do! Help your child to hang or display her new drawing in her room and let everyone adore it.
