Plans for Summer School at Home5 min read

Summer school at home may sound daunting at first. You might be worried about different learning styles and temperaments  or even different schedules for your kids at home.

Earlier, people usually opted for school year-round education because that worked best for them.

But now the time has changed. Your kids are probably the luckiest generation till date. People today are just one-click away to get access to almost everything! And that too in no time.

And our guess is that, as a parent, you might have also completed your education from the usual school-based education. But wait a minute! What if we tell you that you can enroll your kids in something new, something even better?

Now coming to the current scenario, you might be waiting for a true summer break. Isn’t it?

And ask your kids, they might just love it! They’ll love enjoying the opportunity to play with your neighbour’s kids as well.

If we guessed that right, it’s time for you to add a few more items to your check-list for this summer.

We are all aware about the fact that there isn’t any “universal break” during much of June, July, and August. Probably, it is the time when your kids might be still learning and blooming.

But there’s a catch. Unsurprisingly, if you let them play, they can easily spend all summer playing video games. But, you shouldn’t do that! Now we must technically try to figure out why that happens.

Exposure to some amount of playing games is quite fine, but if your kid gets obsessed with them then you better be aware! In that case, games can possibly have a bad impact on your little chap.

Let them gather an innate sense that they could be learning or reading or doing something productive.

4 Ideas to Implement Summer School at Home

Solve some math problems altogether!

How about giving your kids a fixed number of math problems once every week? Let’s understand how.

Suppose, you make a draft of 20 questions related to the chapter or lesson being followed. Now tell your kids to solve any 15 questions that they prefer. But you must make sure that they solve all the questions well in time.

We suggest repeating this activity once a week and not on a daily basis. This activity will boost up their confidence level and slowly they’ll realize that they are doing something productive.

Additionally, you can also purchase some math games to help your kid think about mathematics with a developed perspective, possibly a positive one.

This will also help you to make their problem-solving approach a little more relaxed.

Books, books, and books

You must make it a habit to plan a part of your kid’s weekly schedule to go to the library. You might have encountered why we suggest that. Research shows that being surrounded by books in a library helps to leave a good impression on people.

All you need to teach your kids is the advantage and several prospects of reading regularly.

Don’t worry, you will easily find a range of summer reading programs either in your kid’s school library or a local library around. Your kids don’t need an incentive to read, reading is itself an incentive!

But in case, your kid doesn’t find much interest in reading or finds it struggling to deal with books, then it is recommended to help them keep a reading log.

You can also offer prizes to them for a certain number of minutes or books they read.

Also, researchers believe that reading a book aloud together is a great way for kids to spend time together with their families.

It isn’t hard at all. All you need to do is tell them to pick up any book that they prefer. Now you are all set up to execute their reading plan!

Whether they read on their own or with you, at least you’ll be able to notice their focus in books and not anything else around.

Catch-up

It isn’t shocking to note that your child must be possessing something that you could play catch-up with. It’s time to polish his/her math facts.

While on the other side, keeping up a little more practice in grammar is also mandatory.

Moreover, it is also important to improve their writing as well as speaking skills.

You must spend a few minutes each day working on that thing which you feel is the weaker area for your child.

Undoubtedly, this will be a challenging thing to do, but hopefully, you’ll assist them in a more relaxed way with the help of such a plan.

Some popular ideas that you can try are-

  • Solving math drills on the iPad or laptop.
  • Spending 15 minutes to complete their grammar book well in time.
  • Teaching them how to write journals.

Field trips

You might have heard about the fact that San Diego offers free museum trips to their residents especially.

Then what are you waiting for? Hurry up! Time to take your kids to an informative place.

You must definitely explore the vast arrays of museums and gardens that are available to you. And that too, free of cost.

Worry not, if your hometown is far away from San Diego. There are various museums in every city. All you need to do is browse your location on maps and try to find museums around you.

Just make sure to clear your calendar for any particular day. Fix this day, so that you can focus on planning for the trip.

Ask your neighborhood kids to go along with you as well.

What To Remember

You might feel that all of this will be more intense in reality than how it sounds currently. But don’t worry, with a little help and guidance, most of these things will be self-directed by your kids.

Remember, kids are often more resourceful than we give them credit for. Once we set up a plan for them and help them implement it in their lives, it is likely that they will take it to the next level.
