This structure of major scale includes a series of whole steps as well as half steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In simple words, an interval refers to the distance between two notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now coming to the main division of segment, the smallest interval between two notes is called half step and it is known to cover the considerable distance between any note and the closest note next to it.\u00a0 (a black key or a white key)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, the whole step is a bit bigger than the half step. The sum of two half steps makes a whole step. The initial mode of the major scale the first mode starts with C and goes from C to C \u2013 C D E F G A B C. in the same way, the second mode goes from D to D \u2013 D E F G A B C D, and so on for every note present in the scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, you\u2019ll observe a total of 7 modes of the major scale \u2013 one mode for each of the 7 notes in the scale. As we have 12 major scales, the total amount of modes amounts to 84 i.e., 7 x 12. As a matter of fact, each of the 7 modes there have a unique interval structure \u2013comprising of a unique pattern of whole steps and half steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"modes_as_parallel_scales\"><\/span><b>MODES AS PARALLEL SCALES<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 12 notes in the chromatic scale i.e., 84 in total. Each of which have 7 parallel modes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A special thing to note about parallel scales is that they all start on the same note. Also, they have one or more different notes in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a list of 7 modes is shown below along with the notes and scale degrees for each mode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>C \u2013 Ionian<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>C \u2013 Dorian<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>C \u2013 Phrygian<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>C \u2013 Lydian<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>C \u2013 Mixolydian<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>C \u2013 Aeolian<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>C \u2013 Locrian<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you grasp the above music theory, you\u2019ll be prepared to start working with modes in your piano practice. It is recommended to note down the lists provided and the major scale interval structures as well. Following this, you will be able to refer back to these materials as you start working with modes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"improvising_what_we_studied\"><\/span><b>Improvising what we studied\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While performing this exercise, your left hand would play only a single note in the bass, whenever the bass note dies away or repeating it over and over again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simultaneously, your right hand would improvise simple melodies within the framework of a single mode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After some considerable amount of time, try to switch over a significantly different parallel mode by altering a single note in the scale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s understand this in more detail with the help of an example. Suppose you are starting in the C Ionian mode and then switch to the Lydian mode by changing the F natural to an F#, you can again change the F# back to F natural and return to the Ionian mode. In the next step, you change the B to Bb and improvise it in the Mixolydian mode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a beginner, these three modes can give you a good start. With an advent of time, you can even add more modes.\u00a0 After trying Mixolydian, next you can move to Dorian by changing the E to Eb. Once you are done with Dorian, switch to Aeolian by changing the A natural to Ab and so on. The pattern mentioned below works amazingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>1st<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 Ionian<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>2nd\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Lydian<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>3rd<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 Ionian<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>4th<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 Mixolydian<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>5th\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Dorian<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>6th<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 Aeolian<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>7th<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 Phrygian<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>8th<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 Locrian<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowly you\u2019ll become comfortable with C as the starting note, then you may go through the 12 different chromatic starting notes. It is advisable to start with the major keys at the top of the circle of fifths having fewer sharps and flats.\u00a0As a beginner, you\u2019ll find these to be easier to work with.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"conclusion\"><\/span><b>Conclusion\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are various ways to learn jazz modes and that too with some simple hacks.
